Hackthorn Church Of England Primary School

A small school with a BIG heart.

P.E.

Our intent for P.E. - Our Physical Education provision aims to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives.  They will have opportunities to compete in physical activities in order to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

In order to give our children the best possible experiences, we strive to ensure they have a range of opportunities that enable them to develop their skills and knowledge in P.E. JB Sports Coaching support our staff to deliver high quality P.E. lessons that are fun, engaging and inclusive in order to deliver our ambitious curriculum.  All of our children attend Witham Hill Gymnastics Centre throughout the Spring term and have swimming lessons every Summer at Gainsborough Swimming Pool.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

P.E. Long Term Plan 2025-26

Swimming

Every summer term, on a Friday morning, all children (Reception to Year 6) go to Gainsborough Swimming Pool for 10 weeks for their swimming lessons. These lessons are enjoyed by all and give everyone the opportunity to develop their swimming and water safety skills.

Children are taught a range of skills throughout their lessons, which contribute to their swimming attainment by the time they leave us in Year 6.

Our results for 2025-26 swimming are as follows:

Swimming Skill Number of Y6 children proficient % of Y6 children proficient
  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
8 100%
  • Use a range of strokes effectively – for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
7 88%
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
8 100%

Gymnastics

KS2's gymnastic lessons are fully underway. They are demonstrating great resilience and confidence in the range of activities in order to develop their skills further.

KS1 thoroughly enjoyed their gymnastics lessons at Witham Hill. They all made lots of progress with new skills including those on the the beam and trampoline.
