Dear Parents & Friends
KS2 attended their first session at Witham Hill Gymnastics last Wednesday and came back buzzing about their experiences. They are equally excited about their forthcoming trip on the 21st of this month – read on for more details!
At the time of writing KS1 are also looking forward to some hands on animal action at Yorkshire Wildlife Park next Tuesday and we eagerly await to update you on all that they get up to at our next Good Works Assembly.
The hardworking FOHS Team have been extremely busy organising last Friday’s Film Night (which I hear was a great success) and I would like to take the opportunity to remind parents as well about their Bingo Night at the end of this month on Friday 29th March. Look out for a flyer coming home with children in due course with further information.
This term we will be preparing for our Easter Service. We hope you will be able to join us and would be grateful if you could complete and return the usual consent form attached with regard to collecting children after church.

World Book Day at Hackthorn – Friday 08 March
A reminder that there will be NO Good Works Assembly this Friday.
As in previous years, children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite character from a book and we would also like them to bring a copy of the book with them too if possible please. We have some exciting book related activities planned for the day.
KS2 Urban Strides Day at Newton-on-Trent – Thursday 21 March
You should by now have received the letter detailing arrangements for the day. Pupils and staff alike are incredibly excited to have the chance to participate in this event, particularly having enjoyed their amazing performance at Young Voices in Sheffield earlier this year.
Red Nose Day – Friday 15 March
Our School Council took a vote amongst themselves and have decided that Hackthorn should participate again this year, raising funds for Comic Relief. They have proposed a non-uniform day with pupils donating £1 to this worthy cause and wearing something red to school if they have this.
FOHS Easter Egg Competition – Thursday 25 April
A reminder over the Easter holidays for children to get decorating an egg in time for the first week of the new term. FOHS will be holding their competition on the first Thursday back with winners announced at Good Works Assembly the following day. Entry is only £1, with prizes for KS1 and KS2 winners plus runners-up.
Easter Service – Friday 05 April
The Easter Service will take place at 2.00pm on Friday 05 April in the village church. Parents may take their children home after the service if they wish. The remaining children will go home from school in the usual way at 3.30pm. Please complete the attached consent form and return it to school as soon as possible so we are fully aware of your arrangements.
Governor’s (Parting) Thoughts
This will be my last contribution to the school newsletter as I have taken the decision to step down, both as Chair and Member of the Governing Body.
Throughout my time as a parent of a child at the school, as a Governor and latterly as Chair, the thing that has always struck me the most is that the children are cared for and cared about by all who are members of the Hackthorn Community, whether that be teaching staff, office staff, lunchtime staff or other students.
As a geographer, I define a community as ‘a group of people who talk to each other’ and that is what is important to allow the school to go on caring as it does; to support all who work for it and within it by talking. As parents, you are part of that community.
Experience teaches me there is little that cannot be resolved when people actually speak with one other. I would encourage you to air any concerns that you may have, but also to make the effort to publicly celebrate, acknowledge and give thanks for the opportunity that Hackthorn offers your children.
The job of education is to turn out useful members of society. I have every confidence that Hackthorn will continue to provide a wonderful start along that road, especially with your continued support.
Paul Woodhouse, Outgoing Chair of Governors

Collecting Children After Church – Friday 05 April 2019
The school is responsible for bringing children back to school after church services to be dismissed in the usual way at 3.30pm unless we are informed, in writing, otherwise. There are many potential dangers and hazards surrounding the church yard and village hall areas. When collecting your child please ensure they:
- do not play among the grave stones
- keep away from the lake and water ways
- are guided on the path ways and car park avoiding cars and other vehicles
- are safely escorted through the working stable yard on the way to the village hall
- stay within the boundaries of the gated village hall area once at the village hall
If you need a spare copy of the consent form you may download the PDF version of the Newsletter here. Please return the form before March 29th 2019.
