Happy New Year!
Our final few weeks of 2019 were extremely busy. The whole school enjoyed a trip to the LPAC to watch ‘The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe’, fully funded by FOHS. KS1 performed another fantastic Nativity. Their production of ‘Children of the World’ was particularly poignant as the children reflected on Christmas customs around the world and spoke in different languages.
We were listed in the top 10 Lincolnshire schools for the second year in a row and also received media attention for our successful bid in Jessops ‘12 days of community’ which means we will have a day of free maintenance and £500 worth of materials. We’re hoping this will help towards improving the outside of the building in preparation for the school’s 150th birthday celebration on 18 July. Make sure you put this in your diary and inform all your friends. We will soon be forming committees to organise specific aspects of the day so let us know if you’d like to be involved.
Stomach bugs and high temperatures hit Hackthorn in the last few days of term, which resulted in only half of the school attending the Christmas carol service. Nevertheless, those who remained rose to the challenge. Four out of the nine Y6 pupils covered all the readings; children and staff swapped belle plates at the last moment and younger children stepped in to sing duets. The singing was amazing and we even managed a whole school five-part harmony !
This year we look forward to another busy term with lots of exciting opportunities. Andy, from Front Row Music, will be teaching ukulele to all of the children every Friday for 6 weeks, all of the children will be participating in gymnastic lessons at Witham Hill and Y5 and 6 pupils will be preparing for their residential at Kingswood.
Friends of Hackthorn School – Friday 24th January, 6pm
The Friends of Hackthorn School have been incredibly busy and have organized some events over the coming months, please do see their newsletter for more information. There is a Quiz Night on Friday 24th January at the school. Doors open at 6pm and the quiz starts at 6.15pm for the whole family with a maximum number of 6 per team. £5 entry per team. Please sign up for a fun evening and help contribute towards funds.
Year 6 pupils are enjoying their more ‘formal’ homework as preparation for their transition to secondary school. Although we do not set ‘formal homework exercises’ for children in other year groups, we would value your support in helping your children to regularly read, practise their tables and number bonds, learn their spellings and discuss the grammatical terms which are appropriate for their age. These, and other ideas to help your child, can be found on the Parents’ curriculum guide on the school website.
May we remind you that it is very important that we all try to keep congestion to a minimum on a morning and when collecting children from school so that the children can cross the road safely. We almost had a few accidents before Christmas. Please do not park opposite the school entrance in order to ensure the view of children crossing the road is not obscured. Leaving at least 10 metres either side of the lay-by when dropping children off in the morning and at home-time should keep everyone safe. Please also be mindful not to block the villagers’ driveways during these busy times. Our school councillors will be on the case!
Attendance levels continue to be monitored on a termly basis. We will inform you, via a letter, at the start of each term if we have concerns about your child’s attendance.
World Book Day – Friday 6th March
The date for World Book Day is 5 March but we intend to hold our celebrations on 6th March. We would like your children to dress as their favourite character from a book again.

There will be an activity afternoon open to all pre-schoolers on Wednesday 18 March 1:30 until 2:30. Please pass on the message to anyone you know who may have a child of pre-school age. Phone school to book a place.
