Happy New Year!
We have decided to continue our Christian value of Compassion this month, particularly in light of the bereavements which occurred in the last week of term, which have affected four families in our small community. Mrs Dodson and Mrs Hartley would like to pass on their heartfelt thanks for your thoughtful comments and donations. They were both overwhelmed by your kindness. We bought flowers for each and the remaining money will be donated to St Barnabas.
Despite the difficult end to the term, the remaining staff continued to ensure that events went ahead and we had another wonderful whole school trip to Xscape in Castleford. We had so many lovely comments about the children’s behaviour. The manager of the Soft play area remembered us from last year and once again kindly distributed selection boxes to the children on departure. The journey home on the KS1 bus was extremely quiet as the majority of children (and a member of staff!) fell asleep almost immediately, exhausted after their energetic exploits!
We had an enjoyable Christmas party and a successful Carol service (despite one or two technical hitches).
This year we look forward to another busy term with lots of exciting opportunities. The Young Shakespeare company will be visiting KS2 again, a representative from Lincolnshire Music Service will be teaching the children about World Music every Friday, all of the children will be participating in gymnastic lessons at Witham Hill, Y5 and 6 pupils will be preparing for their residential at Rand farm and of course we have Young Voices this Friday. KS2 parents, make sure you come prepared with your Hackthorn banners! It looks like you are seated nearer us this year.
PLEASE NOTE that there will be NO Good works assembly this Friday due to the Young Voices trip.
Friends of Hackthorn School – 4 February
The Friends of Hackthorn School have been incredibly busy and are keen for new recruits to help with future initiatives. Their next planning meeting is on Monday 4 February at 3.35pm. Speak to Mrs Crowther for details of how to get involved.
Attendance levels continue to be monitored on a termly basis. We will inform you, via a letter, at the start of each term if we have concerns about your child’s attendance.
Year 6 pupils are enjoying their more ‘formal’ homework as preparation for their transition to secondary school. Although we do not set ‘formal home-work exercises’ for children in other year groups, we would value your sup-port in helping your children to regularly read, practise their tables and num-ber bonds, learn their spellings and discuss the grammatical terms which are appropriate for their age. These, and other ideas to help your child, can be found on the Parents’ curriculum guide on the school website.
May we remind you that it is very important that we all try to keep congestion to a mini-mum on a morning and when collecting children from school so that the children can cross the road safely. We almost had a few accidents before Christmas. Please do not park opposite the school entrance in order to ensure the view of children crossing the road is not obscured. Leaving at least 10 metres either side of the lay-by when dropping children off in the morning and at home-time should keep everyone safe. Please also be mindful not to block the villagers’ driveways during these busy times. Our school councillors will be on the case!
Young Shakespeare company – 8 Feb
Once again KS2 are fortunate to have the Young Shakespeare company visiting on the morning of Friday 8th February. Please note that there will be NO Good works assembly on this day.
World Book Day – 8 March
Although the official date for World Book Day is 7 March, we will be
celebrating it on 8 March. This will give the children more time to
participate in book related activities. We would like your children to dress as their favourite character from a book again. Perhaps finding a suitable costume could be your half-term project!
Pre-school Easter Activity Afternoon – 27 March
There will be an activity afternoon open to all pre-schoolers on Wednesday 27 March 1:30 until 2:30. Please pass on the message to anyone you know who may have a child of pre-school age. Phone school to book a place.
