Do your memories of maths lessons go something like this ? “Ahh, but Sir, when are we gonna need to know this in real life?” Here at Hackthorn, we aim to make sure this question will never arise, as Reception found out recently when they set up their own business making and selling flapjacks to their older colleauges.
Lots of maths involved here … they needed to work out what ingredients they would need in order to make enough to go around the whole school, as the recipe only catered for half the quantity they would need.
Once they had the product ready for market, they needed to decide on a pricing structure, and make sure they could work out how much to charge if someone wanted more than one piece of flapjack, not to mention calculating how much change to give to anyone who didn’t have the exact money.
Everyone had a great experience and agreed that they learned loads without it feeling like hard work. What was also really nice was that some of the older children took the trouble to congratulate their young comrades on a job well done!
